The College established in 16th August,1989 was affiliated to the Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University Raipur. Initially it had started with a small strength of 120 (BA-Part One) students and few optional subjects (Hindi Literature,Economics,History,Geography,Sociology,Political Science) in the Arts Faculty. It mainly caters to the educational needs of the tribal belt in this region with its focused objective to provide education to girl students from the tribal areas. Presently the college is affiliated to Shaheed Mahendra Karma, University, Bastar. Jagdalpur (Chhattisgarh). 

In the absence of its own building, from 1989 to 2008, the college was operated in the Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Charama. In 2008, the college shifted from the school after the building was ready. The name of the college was changed from Government College , Charama to Government Shaheed Gendsingh College, Charama by order number F 5 -65 /2007 /38, Raipur, Dated : 14 -5 -2008 of  Department of Higher Education.

Shaheed Gendsingh was a zamindar of Paralkot area of ​​Chhattisgarh. There were about 165 villages under Paralkot Zamindari and Paralkot was the headquarters of Zamindari. Paralkot is a tribal village near Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, where three rivers meet. He fought against the British government and for this reason he was hanged by the British on January 20, 1825. Gendsingh was the first freedom fighter of Chhattisgarh.
